Tell us about your site and equipment and our team will follow up, typically within one business hour. Every project includes a secure chain of custody and a serialized Certificate of Data Destruction.

Data center decommissioning is the managed shutdown and removal of servers, storage arrays, and network equipment from a data center, with secure data destruction, certified recycling, and value recovery. All Green Electronics Recycling runs the full process nationwide, including rack removal, packing, transport, on-site hard drive shredding, and a serialized Certificate of Data Destruction, all under one documented chain of custody.

What Does Data Center Decommissioning Cover?

A decommission is more than hauling equipment away. It covers planning and inventory, data destruction, physical teardown, transport, recycling or remarketing, and the reporting your compliance team needs. All Green handles each step, so you have one vendor and one record for the whole project.

Our services include IT asset disposition, secure data destruction, on-site hard drive shredding, data wiping, degaussing, IT asset remarketing, and reverse logistics. Each asset is tagged and tracked, so your records show what happened to every serialized device.

How Does a Data Center Decommission Work?

All Green works to a defined sequence so nothing is missed and the chain of custody stays intact from start to finish.

  1. Plan and inventory. We scope the site, confirm equipment types and quantities, and agree a schedule that fits your downtime window.
  2. Destroy data. Drives are wiped, degaussed, or shredded on site before anything leaves your control.
  3. Teardown and packing. We de-cable, remove racks and cabinets, and securely pack equipment for transport.
  4. Transport. Sealed shipments move under a tracked chain of custody to our processing facility.
  5. Recycle or remarket. Equipment with resale value is remarketed; the rest is recycled under a zero-landfill policy.
  6. Report. You receive a serialized Certificate of Data Destruction and full asset reporting.

How Is Data Destroyed During a Decommission?

The destruction method should match the media type and your risk profile. All Green offers several and can combine them across a single project.

On-Site Hard Drive Shredding

Shredding physically destroys drives and is the most definitive option for failed drives or highly sensitive data. All Green brings a mobile shredding truck to your data center, and your team can witness the destruction in person or receive a video record, so drives never leave your site intact.

Data Wiping to DoD 5220.22-M

Wiping overwrites data so devices can be reused or remarketed. All Green performs wiping to the DoD 5220.22-M standard.

Degaussing

Degaussing uses a strong magnetic field to erase magnetic media such as traditional hard drives and tapes. Our practices align with NIST SP 800-88, the federal media sanitization guideline referenced by many compliance programs.

Chain of Custody and Documentation

Every engagement includes a serialized Certificate of Data Destruction and a secure chain of custody, so auditors get a traceable record rather than a bulk statement. The certificate is typically issued within about 10 business days of the job, depending on its size. Chain of custody is maintained with GPS-tracked trucks, background-checked drivers, sealed containers, and a client reporting portal.

Our processes are audited and align with NIST SP 800-88, DoD 5220.22-M, HIPAA, FISMA, GLBA, FACTA, PCI DSS, ISO 27001 and 27040, SOX, and EPA RCRA. All Green is R2 certified, and our recycling is zero-landfill.

Recovering Value From Retired Data Center Hardware

Decommissioning is also a chance to recover capital. Where equipment condition and data sanitization allow, All Green remarkets servers, storage, and networking gear through its reseller network. As a Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher, we add value before resale and return a percentage of the net revenue to you. Equipment without resale value is recycled under our zero-landfill approach.
