There have been some fun innovations in technology, but this one just looks delicious.

University of Exetor senior lecturer and materials scientist Liang Hao founded a company called Choc Edge to perfect a 3-D machine that prints personalized chocolate shapes. Hao recently told BBC News that he has perfected the printer and hopes to start selling it shortly.

The printer functions similarly to other 3-D printers. A custom image in a 3-D printing file language is uploaded to the printer. Melted chocolate is then loaded into the machine using a syringe. Special software takes the file and translates it into corresponding movements of a nozzle head. The shape is printed layer by layer with chocolate from the nozzle.

Although I would love to have one of these in my apartment, it appears to be aimed at the small business owner rather than the home cook. It is expected to sell at a little more than $4,500 USD.

“You just need to melt some chocolate, fill the syringe that is stored in the printer, and get creative in printing your chocolate,” Hao told the BBC.

Okay, so maybe this piece of technology isn’t technically related to the environment, but I couldn’t help but share it! If you buy one, make sure you use organic or fair-trade chocolate for an eco-friendly treat.
