Sunnyvale and Monterey are joining 14 other jurisdictions in California to ban plastic shopping bags.

Retailers and grocery stores will be banned from handing out plastic bags, though nonprofits and restaurants will be exempted. Paper bags will be distributed for a 10 cent fee, which will raise to 25 cents in 2013 in Monterey and 2014 in Sunnyvale.

The city of Monterey expects to cut plastic bag use by 2.8 million bags each year and prevent 740,000 bag paper bags from being distributed.
