Hawaii Proposes Plastic Bag Fee
If House Bill 2260 passes in Hawaii, the state would become the first one to charge for disposable and plastic bags.
The measure would attempt to discourage shoppers from using disposable bags by charging a 5 cent fee for both paper and plastic. Although similar measures have passed in various cities and counties, statewide legislation has yet to be passed on this issue.
Part of the money made from the fee would go towards the protection of Hawaii’s mauka forests and watersheds.
“We feel like we’re going to be turning a problem into a solution,” said Stuart Coleman of the Surfrider Foundation.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed that this measure passes—and that other states soon follow!
