It’s mind boggling that 16 mega-freighters create as much pollution as all the cars in the world. That’s exactly what is being shown by award-winning science writer Fred Pearce, who is also an environmental consultant to New Scientist.

Regulations have existed in the auto industry for the past 30 years, but it seems like the freighting industry is left to its own accord. Ships are allowed to use the lowest grade coal to burn as energy.
