This week, the Maguire daisy became the 21st species to be removed from the endangered species list, after a 25-year effort to rescue it from extinction.
This dime-sized wildflower is found in sandstone canyons and atop of mesas in Utah. In 1985, there were only seven living Maguire daisy plants. Today there are over 163,000.
“The delisting of the Maguire daisy shows that the Endangered Species Act is an effective tool not only to save species from the brink of extinction, but also to recover them to healthy populations,” said Tom Strickland, assistant secretary of the Interior for Fish and Wildlife and Parks, in a statement.
