7-Eleven goes green in Japan

In an ambitious move, 7-Eleven is attempting to turn its Japanese stores green.

These new stores, referred to as “eco-konbinis” in Japan,  will be powered by solar energy and equipped with electric vehicle chargers. Green 7-11 stores were recently introduced in Taiwan and DeLand, Florida. Stores in Malaysia, the Phillipines, and Hong Kong are currently testing LED lights.

The project in Japan calls for 100 of these stores to be build a year, and for 100 existing stores to be converted into eco-konbinis. Ultimately, the goal is for 100 percent of the stores in the country to be eco-konbinis. The main obstacle to this project is the expense: It can cost up to 30 percent more to build an eco-friendly store than a traditional ones.
