10 Easy Ways to Conserve Water
In honor of World Water Day on March 22, here are 10 easy ways to conserve water:
- Fill a pitcher or a water bottle with water and keep it in the refrigerator. This way, you don’t have to run the facet while waiting for the water to cool down.
- Wash fruits and vegetables in a pan of water instead of running the tap.
- Don’t defrost food in running water. Instead, thaw it in the refrigerator overnight. Not only does this save water, but it is also safer.
- Only run the dishwasher when full. This applies to the washing machine too.
- Wash dark clothes in cold water.
- Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth. You’ve probably heard this tip before, but do you actually do it?
- Only water your plants when necessary. Overwatering kills more plants than underwatering does!
- Adjust your sprinklers so that only the lawn is watered—not sidewalks, streets, or unsuspecting neighbors.
- Know where your water shut-off valve is. If there is a leak or a pipe burst, this can save money and water.
- Last but not least, keep an eye on your water bill for unusually high use. This can indicate a leak somewhere.
