In honor of World Water Day on March 22, here are 10 easy ways to conserve water:

  1. Fill a pitcher or a water bottle with water and keep it in the refrigerator. This way, you don’t have to run the facet while waiting for the water to cool down.
  2. Wash fruits and vegetables in a pan of water instead of running the tap.
  3. Don’t defrost food in running water. Instead, thaw it in the refrigerator overnight. Not only does this save water, but it is also safer.
  4. Only run the dishwasher when full. This applies to the washing machine too.
  5. Wash dark clothes in cold water.
  6. Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth. You’ve probably heard this tip before, but do you actually do it?
  7. Only water your plants when necessary. Overwatering kills more plants than underwatering does!
  8. Adjust your sprinklers so that only the lawn is watered—not sidewalks, streets, or unsuspecting neighbors.
  9. Know where your water shut-off valve is. If there is a leak or a pipe burst, this can save money and water.
  10. Last but not least, keep an eye on your water bill for unusually high use. This can indicate a leak somewhere.
