Plastic Bags on Their Way Out in Laguna Beach

Yet another city wants to ban the plastic bag? We’re not complaining.

Laguna Beach is the latest city to jump on the bandwagon to ban the single-use plastic bags distributed by retailers.

If this law goes into effect, retailers will have a 6-month grace period to use up existing stock. Stores that don’t comply with the new law will receive one courtesy warning, then face fees of up to $500 for repeated violations.

Unlike Los Angeles, Laguna Beach plans to offer paper bags, albeit with a possible charge of 10 cents per bag.

“It costs two to three cents on average to produce a plastic bag,” said Chad Nelsen, environmental director of the Surfrider Foundation. “It costs the public 17 cents to clean them up.”

Have you made the switch to reusable bags yet?
