Only 22 percent of all consumers are willing to pay more for green products, according to a global study by Nielsen analysis firm.

The study polled 25,000 people in 51 countries and was released on August 28, 2011. In the Middle East and Africa, 33 percent of respondents were willing to spend more money on eco-friendly products. Only 12 percent of North Americans were willing to do the same.

The weather might be the reason for this:

“The hot and dry climates in many Middle Eastern and African countries and the widely held perception that temperatures are rising every summer has likely led to an increased concern about climate change and weather variation,” said Ram Mohan Rao, Managing Director, Nielsen Egypt.

Also notable is that 48 percent of respondents in North America said that they buy the cheapest product available, regardless of its impact on the environment.

What do you think? I think it would be interesting to see a more detailed breakdown. For example, I’m sure that the answers in North America varied by region.
