Are phone books irrelevant in the internet age? Some think so, which is why San Francisco seeks to ban unsolicited distribution of the Yellow Pages.

Under the proposed law, phone companies and other distributors of the Yellow Pages will be barred from leaving copies on doorsteps or lobbies without prior permission.

However, this does not mean that the Yellow Pages cannot be distributed at all.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, “The Yellow Page companies could contact consumers by e-mail, direct mail, phone solicitations, or in person, asking if they would like the directory. If the response is positive, the phone book could be delivered. Consumers also would be able to pick them up at a distribution center.”

One would assume that consumers could also call the Yellow Page companies and request a copy of the phone book.

The white pages, whose distribution is mandated by California state law, will not be affected by this plan. Duel white and Yellow Pages phone books will have to abide by the new restrictions.
